Nat West Background
The history of Nat West goes back to 1968, when National Provincial Bank and Westminster Bank joined their forces and formed a new bank called National Westminster Bank. This was a surprise for both the City and the public, although both Banks benefitted from the merger.
The newly created Bank, with over 3,500 branches, developed a whole new range of different services including their first credit card (Access) and cash dispensers called Servicetills. The Nat West bank also entered the securities business and widened their mortgage services.
In March of 2000, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group purchased Nat West for 21 billion pounds, positioning it in one of the largest financial services groups in the world.
